Each week we look at criminal data and general information, like population and employment status, for a specific state. Last week we looked at Alabama. This week we’re on to Alaska.
About Alaska*
Alaska Population and Age Distribution. Alaska’s estimated population was just over 730,000 thousand people. The median age was 33.8 years. 26% of the population was under the age of 18, and 8.5% was 65 years and over.
Median Household Income. The median income of households was $67,712. The total number of households was 251,651 with an average of 2.8 people.
Alaska Employment and Unemployment Rate. 62.3% of the Alaska population over the age of 15 were employed which ranks 12th in the nation. The Alaska unemployment rate is 7.8% which was ranked 34th in the country.
Types of Employers. The types of employers in Alaska were as follows: 22,407 (6.4%) were self-employed, 91,227 (26%) were employed by the federal, state, or local government and 237,316 (67.5%) were employed by the private sector.
Top Five Industries. The top five industries by percent in Alaska were: Educational Services and Health Care (24.4%), Public Administration (11.7%), Retail (10.7%), Accommodations/Food Service/Entertainment (9.3%), and Professional/Administrative/Scientific (8.1%).
Occupations. Occupations for the population employed (over the age of 15) in Alaska’s private sector were: Business, Science, and Arts (36.8%); Service (19.2%), Sales and Office (21.4%), Natural Resources, Construction, and Maintenance (11.8%), and Production, Transportation, and Material Moving (10.8%).
Health Insurance Coverage. 80% of the civilian non-institutionalized population had health insurance coverage (21% had no coverage). Of those with coverage, 63% had private coverage and 26% had public coverage.
Disability. 11% of the civilian non-institutionalized population of Alaska reported a disability. The Alaska disability claim rate was ranked 38th in the country.

Alaska Crime Data*
Total Crime Rate. Alaska had a total crime rate of 632.6 incidents per 100,000 individuals. Of the 632.6, 3.2 were murders, 73.4 were forcible rapes, 94 were robberies, and 462 were aggravated assaults.
Property Crime Rate. The property crime rate was 2,935 incidents per 100,000 individuals. Of the 2,935, 514 were burglaries, 2,178 were larceny/thefts, and 241 were motor vehicle thefts.
Law Enforcement. Alaska had the 40th most law enforcement employees per population. Alaska ranked 43rd for the most police officers per population by state.
