About Florida*
Florida Population and Age Distribution. Florida’s estimated population was 19.3 million. The median age was 41.1 years. 21% of the population was under the age of 18, and 18% was 65 years and over.
Median Household Income. The median income of households was $45,040. The total number of households was 7,197,943 with an average of 2.62 people.
Florida Employment and Unemployment Rate. 52.4% of the Florida population over the age of 15 were employed which ranks 48th in the nation. The Florida unemployment rate is 11.5% which was ranked 2nd in the country.
Types of Employers. The types of employers in Florida were as follows: 491,098 (5.9%) were self-employed, 1,077,744 (13%) were employed by the federal, state, or local government and 6,696,992 (80.9%) were employed by the private sector.
Top Five Industries. The top five industries by percent in Florida were: Educational Services and Health Care (21.5%), Retail (13.8%), Professional/Administrative/Scientific (12.6%), Accommodations/Food Service/Entertainment (12%), and Finance, Insurance Real Estate, Rental/Leasing (7.7%).
Occupations. Occupations for the population employed (over the age of 15) in Florida’s private sector were: Business, Science, and Arts (33.7%), Service (20.5%), Sales and Office (28%), Natural Resources, Construction, and Maintenance (8.9%), and Production, Transportation, and Material Moving (8.9%).
Florida Health Insurance Coverage. 80% of the civilian non-institutionalized population had health insurance coverage (20% had no coverage). Of those with coverage, 57% had private coverage and 35% had public coverage.
Disability. 13% of the civilian non-institutionalized population of Florida reported a disability. The Florida disability claim rate was ranked 19th in the country.

Florida Crime Data*
Total Violent Crimes. Florida had 94,087 total violent crimes which ranked 3rd in the nation and with a violent crime rate 0.49% which ranked it 9th among all the states including DC & PR. Of the total number of violent crimes, 1,009 were murders, 5,260 were forcible rapes, 23,889 were robberies, and 63,929 were aggravated assaults.
Property Crime. Florida had 632,988 total property crimes. Of the total number of property crimes, 153,563 were burglaries, 442,095 were larceny/thefts, and 37,330 were motor vehicle thefts.
Law Enforcement. Florida had the 8th most law enforcement employees per population. Florida ranked 14th in the nation for the most police officers per population.
