Illinois Population and Age Distribution. Illinois’ estimated population was 12.9 million. The median age was 37 years. 24% of the population was under the age of 18, and 13% was 65 years and over.
Median Household Income. The median income of households was $55,137. The total number of households was 4,770,194 with an average of 2.64 people.
Illinois Employment and Unemployment Rate. 59.3% of the Illinois population over the age of 15 were employed which ranks 22nd in the nation. The Illinois unemployment rate is 10.2% which was ranked 12th in the country.
Types of Employers. The types of employers in Illinois were as follows: 286,994 (4.8%) were self-employed, 774,614 (12.8%) were employed by the federal, state, or local government and 4,960,918 (82.3%) were employed by the private sector.
Top Five Industries. The top five industries by percent in Illinois were: Educational Services and Health Care (23%), Manufacturing (12.7%), Professional/Administrative/Scientific (11.1%), Retail (11%), Accommodations/Food Service/Entertainment (9.1%).
Occupations. Occupations for the population employed (over the age of 15) in Illinois’ private sector were: Business, Science, and Arts (36.1%), Sales and Office (24.9%), Service (17.6%), Production, Transportation, and Material Moving (14.1%), and Natural Resources, Construction, and Maintenance (7.3%).
Illinois Health Insurance Coverage. 87% of the civilian non-institutionalized population had health insurance coverage (13% had no coverage). Of those with coverage, 67% had private coverage and 31% had public coverage.
Disability. 11% of the civilian non-institutionalized population of Illinois reported a disability. The Illinois disability claim rate was ranked 43rd in the country.

Illinois Crime Data*
Total Violent Crimes. Illinois had 53,403 total violent crimes (which ranked 5th in the nation) and with a violent crime rate 0.41% (which ranked it 18th among all the states including DC & PR). Of the total number of violent crimes, 744 were murders, 3,570 were forcible rapes, 19,471 were robberies, and 29,618 were aggravated assaults.
Property Crime. Illinois had 332,013 total property crimes. Of the total number of property crimes, 71,101 were burglaries, 235,222 were larceny/thefts, and 25,690 were motor vehicle thefts.
Law Enforcement. Illinois had the 9th most law enforcement employees per population. Illinois ranked 7th in the nation for the most police officers per population.
