Kansas Population and Age Distribution. Kansas’ estimated population was 2.9 million. The median age was 36 years. 25% of the population was under the age of 18, and 14% was 65 years and over.
Median Household Income. The median income of households was $50,241. The total number of households was 1,113,911 with an average of 2.52 people.
Kansas Employment and Unemployment Rate. 62.2% of the Kansas population over the age of 15 were employed which ranks 14th in the nation. The Kansas unemployment rate is 6.5% which was ranked 43rd in the country.
Types of Employers. The types of employers in Kansas were as follows: 82,773 (5.9%) were self-employed, 237,622 (17%) were employed by the federal, state, or local government and 1,071,524 (76.8%) were employed by the private sector.
Top Five Industries. The top five industries by percent in Kansas were: Educational Services and Health Care (24.6%), Manufacturing (12.7%), Retail (11.1%), Professional/Administrative/Scientific (8.5%), and Accommodations/Food Service/Entertainment (8.2%).
Occupations. Occupations for the population employed (over the age of 15) in Kansas’ private sector were: Business, Science, and Arts (35.4%), Sales and Office (24%), Service (17.3%), Production, Transportation, and Material Moving (13.5%), and Natural Resources, Construction, and Maintenance (9.9%).
Kansas Health Insurance Coverage. 87% of the civilian non-institutionalized population had health insurance coverage (13% had no coverage). Of those with coverage, 72% had private coverage and 27% had public coverage.
Disability. 12% of the civilian non-institutionalized population of Kansas reported a disability. The Kansas disability claim rate was ranked 27th in the country.

Total Violent Crimes. Kansas had 10,232 total violent crimes (which ranked 30th in the nation) and with a violent crime rate 0.35% (which ranked it 23rd among all the states including DC & PR). Of the total number of violent crimes, 84 were murders, 1,053 were forcible rapes, 1,500 were robberies, and 7,595 were aggravated assaults.
Property Crime. Kansas had 90,710 total property crimes. Of the total number of property crimes, 18,767 were burglaries, 65,165 were larceny/thefts, and 6,778 were motor vehicle thefts.
Law Enforcement. Kansas had the 7th most law enforcement employees per population. Kansas ranked 8th in the nation for the most police officers per population.
