Louisiana Population and Age Distribution. Louisiana’s estimated population was 4.6 million. The median age was 36 years. 24% of the population was under the age of 18, and 13% was 65 years and over.
Median Household Income. The median income of households was $42,944. The total number of households was 1,719,473 with an average of 2.6 people.
Louisiana Employment and Unemployment Rate. 55.5% of the Louisiana population over the age of 15 were employed which ranks 37th in the nation. The Louisiana unemployment rate is 8.8% which was ranked 25th in the country.
Types of Employers. The types of employers in Louisiana were as follows: 110,374 (5.5%) were self-employed, 315,224 (15.7%) were employed by the federal, state, or local government and 1,573,418 (78.6%) were employed by the private sector.
Top Five Industries. The top five industries by percent in Louisiana were: Educational Services and Health Care (23.5%), Retail (11.5%), Accommodations/Food Service/Entertainment (10.5%), Professional/Administrative/Scientific (8.6%), and Construction (8.1%),
Occupations. Occupations for the population employed (over the age of 15) in Louisiana’s private sector were: Business, Science, and Arts (31.9%), Sales and Office (23.5%), Service (19.6%), Natural Resources, Construction, and Maintenance (12.7%), and Production, Transportation, and Material Moving (12.2%).
Louisiana Health Insurance Coverage. 83% of the civilian non-institutionalized population had health insurance coverage (17% had no coverage). Of those with coverage, 59% had private coverage and 35% had public coverage.
Disability. 15% of the civilian non-institutionalized population of Louisiana reported a disability. The Louisiana disability claim rate was ranked 7th in the country.

Louisiana Crime Data*
Total Violent Crimes. Louisiana had 22,868 total violent crimes (which ranked 18th in the nation) and with a violent crime rate 0.50% (which ranked it 8th among all the states including DC & PR). Of the total number of violent crimes, 495 were murders, 1,158 were forcible rapes, 5,475 were robberies, and 15,740 were aggravated assaults.
Property Crime. Louisiana had 162,936 total property crimes. Of the total number of property crimes, 42,140 were burglaries, 112,915 were larceny/thefts, and 7,881 were motor vehicle thefts.
Law Enforcement. Louisiana had the 2nd most law enforcement employees per population. Louisiana ranked 2nd in the nation for the most police officers per population.
