Maine Population and Age Distribution. Maine’s estimated population was 1.3 million. The median age was 43.5 years. 20% of the population was under the age of 18, and 17% was 65 years and over.
Median Household Income. The median income of households was $46,709. The total number of households was 554,543 with an average of 2.33 people.
Maine Employment and Unemployment Rate. 59.0% of the Maine population over the age of 15 were employed which ranks 24th in the nation. The Maine unemployment rate is 7.6% which was ranked 36th in the country.
Types of Employers. The types of employers in Maine were as follows: 55,276 (8.6%) were self-employed, 89,435 (13.8%) were employed by the federal, state, or local government and 500,509 (77.4%) were employed by the private sector.
Top Five Industries. The top five industries by percent in Maine were: Educational Services and Health Care (27.5%), Retail (13.6%), Manufacturing (9.2%), Accommodations/Food Service/Entertainment (9.1%), and Professional/Administrative/Scientific (8.3%).
Occupations. Occupations for the population employed (over the age of 15) in Maine’s private sector were: Business, Science, and Arts (33.9%), Sales and Office (24.5%), Service (18.7%), Production, Transportation, and Material Moving (11.6%), and Natural Resources, Construction, and Maintenance (11.2%).
Maine Health Insurance Coverage. 90% of the civilian non-institutionalized population had health insurance coverage (10% had no coverage). Of those with coverage, 65% had private coverage and 39% had public coverage.
Disability. 16% of the civilian non-institutionalized population of Maine reported a disability. The Maine disability claim rate was ranked 6th in the country.

Maine Crime Data*
Total Violent Crimes. Maine had 1,631 total violent crimes (which ranked 50th in the nation) and with a violent crime rate 0.12% (which ranked it 52nd among all the states including DC & PR). Of the total number of violent crimes, 25 were murders, 372 were forcible rapes, 423 were robberies, and 811 were aggravated assaults.
Property Crime. Maine had 33,361 total property crimes. Of the total number of property crimes, 7,461 were burglaries, 24,905 were larceny/thefts, and 995 were motor vehicle thefts.
Law Enforcement. Maine had the 50th most law enforcement employees per population. Maine ranked 48th in the nation for the most police officers per population.
