Michigan Population and Age Distribution. Michigan’s estimated population was 9.9 million. The median age was 39.5 years. 23% of the population was under the age of 18, and 15% was 65 years and over.
Median Household Income. The median income of households was $46,859. The total number of households was 3,819,068 with an average of 2.53 people.
Michigan Employment and Unemployment Rate. 54.3% of the Michigan population over the age of 15 were employed which ranks 42nd in the nation. The Michigan unemployment rate is 11.3% which was ranked 4th in the country.
Types of Employers. The types of employers in Michigan were as follows: 220,527 (5.1%) were self-employed, 491,973 (11.5%) were employed by the federal, state, or local government and 3,565,477 (83.2%) were employed by the private sector.
Top Five Industries. The top five industries by percent in Michigan were: Educational Services and Health Care (24%), Manufacturing (17.2%), Retail (11.4%), Accommodations/Food Service/Entertainment (9.6%), and Professional/Administrative/Scientific (9.4%).
Occupations. Occupations for the population employed (over the age of 15) in Michigan’s private sector were: Business, Science, and Arts (34.1%), Sales and Office (24.2%), Service (19%), Production, Transportation, and Material Moving (15%), and Natural Resources, Construction, and Maintenance (7.7%).
Michigan Health Insurance Coverage. 89% of the civilian non-institutionalized population had health insurance coverage (11% had no coverage). Of those with coverage, 69% had private coverage and 34% had public coverage.
Disability. 14% of the civilian non-institutionalized population of Michigan reported a disability. The Michigan disability claim rate was ranked 13th in the country.

Michigan Crime Data*
Total Violent Crimes. Michigan had 44,922 total violent crimes (which ranked 6th in the nation) and with a violent crime rate of 0.45% (which ranked it 13th among all the states including DC & PR). Of the total number of violent crimes, 689 were murders, 4,589 were forcible rapes, 10,434 were robberies, and 29,210 were aggravated assaults.
Property Crime. Michigan had 250,101 total property crimes. Of the total number of property crimes, 65,665 were burglaries, 159,321 were larceny/thefts, and 25,115 were motor vehicle thefts.
Law Enforcement. Michigan had the 49th most law enforcement employees per population. Michigan ranked 45th in the nation for the most police officers per population.
