Median Household Income. The median income of households was $45,150. The total number of households was 3,731,325 with an average of 2.55 people.
North Carolina Employment and Unemployment Rate. 55.3% of the North Carolina population over the age of 15 were employed which ranks 40th in the nation. The North Carolina unemployment rate is 10.8% which was ranked 9th in the country.
Types of Employers. The types of employers in North Carolina were as follows: 253,999 (6%) were self-employed, 634,163 (14.9%) were employed by the federal, state, or local government and 3,373,485 (79%) were employed by the private sector.
Top Five Industries. The top five industries by percent in North Carolina were: Educational Services and Health Care (23.7%), Manufacturing (12.5%), Retail (11.8%), Professional/Administrative/Scientific (9.9%), and Accommodations/Food Service/Entertainment (9.6%).
North Carolina Occupations. Occupations for the population employed (over the age of 15) in North Carolina’s private sector were: Business, Science, and Arts (35.6%), Sales and Office (23.5%), Service (18%), Production, Transportation, and Material Moving (13.2%), and Natural Resources, Construction, and Maintenance (9.7%).
North Carolina Health Insurance Coverage. 83% of the civilian non-institutionalized population had health insurance coverage (17% had no coverage). Of those with coverage, 63% had private coverage and 32% had public coverage.
Disability. 13% of the civilian non-institutionalized population of North Carolina reported a disability. The North Carolina disability claim rate was ranked 18th in the country.

Total Violent Crimes. North Carolina had 34,464 total violent crimes (which ranked 11th in the nation) and with a violent crime rate of 0.35% (which ranked it 24th among all the states including DC & PR). Of the total number of violent crimes, 479 were murders, 1,984 were forcible rapes, 9,392 were robberies, and 22,609 were aggravated assaults.
Property Crime. North Carolina had 328,594 total property crimes. Of the total number of property crimes, 99,323 were burglaries, 213,151 were larceny/thefts, and 16,120 were motor vehicle thefts.
Law Enforcement. North Carolina had the 17th most law enforcement employees per population. North Carolina ranked 17th in the nation for the most police officers per population.
