North Dakota Population and Age Distribution. North Dakota’s estimated population was 0.7 million. The median age was 36.2 years. 22% of the population was under the age of 18, and 14% was 65 years and over.
Median Household Income. The median income of households was $53,585. The total number of households was 290,944 with an average of 2.32 people.
North Dakota Employment and Unemployment Rate. 67.6% of the North Dakota population over the age of 15 were employed which ranks 1 st in the nation. The North Dakota unemployment rate is 3.3% which was ranked 51st in the country.
Types of Employers. The types of employers in North Dakota were as follows: 31,839 (8.4%) were self-employed, 64,869 (17.1%) were employed by the federal, state, or local government and 281,090 (74.2%) were employed by the private sector.
Top Five Industries. The top five industries by percent in North Dakota were: Educational Services and Health Care (24.6%), Retail (13.1%), Agriculture, Forestry, Fishing/Hunting, and Mining (9.3%), Accommodations/Food Service/Entertainment (7.7%), and Construction (7.1%).
North Dakota Occupations. Occupations for the population employed (over the age of 15) in North Dakota’s private sector were: Business, Science, and Arts (34.2%), Sales and Office (23.2%), Service (17.2%), Natural Resources, Construction, and Maintenance (13.4%), and Production, Transportation, and Material Moving (12%).
North Dakota Health Insurance Coverage. 90% of the civilian non-institutionalized population had health insurance coverage (10% had no coverage). Of those with coverage, 80% had private coverage and 23% had public coverage.
Disability. 11% of the civilian non-institutionalized population of North Dakota reported a disability. The North Dakota disability claim rate was ranked 45th in the country.

Total Violent Crimes. North Dakota had 1,712 total violent crimes (which ranked 49th in the nation) and with a violent crime rate of 0.24% (which ranked it 42nd among all the states including DC & PR). Of the total number of violent crimes, 28 were murders, 272 were forcible rapes, 131 were robberies, and 1,281 were aggravated assaults.
Property Crime. North Dakota had 14,063 total property crimes. Of the total number of property crimes, 2,377 were burglaries, 10,535 were larceny/thefts, and 1,151 were motor vehicle thefts.
Law Enforcement. North Dakota had the 35th most law enforcement employees per population. North Dakota ranked 31st in the nation for the most police officers per population.
