New Mexico Population and Age Distribution. New Mexico’s estimated population was 2.1 million. The median age was 36.8 years. 25% of the population was under the age of 18, and 14% was 65 years and over.
Median Household Income. The median income of households was $42,558. The total number of households was 764,996 with an average of 2.67 people.
New Mexico Employment and Unemployment Rate. 53.5% of the New Mexico population over the age of 15 were employed which ranks 46th in the nation. The New Mexico unemployment rate is 10.3% which was ranked 11th in the country.
Types of Employers. The types of employers in New Mexico were as follows: 59,295 (6.8%) were self-employed, 195,797 (22.5%) were employed by the federal, state, or local government and 613,601 (70.5%) were employed by the private sector.
Top Five Industries. The top five industries by percent in New Mexico were: Educational Services and Health Care (26.1%), Retail (11.3%), Professional/Administrative/Scientific (10.6%), Accommodations/Food Service/Entertainment (10.6%), and Public Administration (7.9%).
New Mexico Occupations. Occupations for the population employed (over the age of 15) in New Mexico’s private sector were: Business, Science, and Arts (35.6%), Sales and Office (23.5%), Service (20.6%), Natural Resources, Construction, and Maintenance (11.2%), and Production, Transportation, and Material Moving (9.1%).
New Mexico Health Insurance Coverage. 82% of the civilian non-institutionalized population had health insurance coverage (18% had no coverage). Of those with coverage, 55% had private coverage and 38% had public coverage.
Disability. 15% of the civilian non-institutionalized population of New Mexico reported a disability. The New Mexico disability claim rate was ranked 10th in the country.

New Mexico Crime Data*
Total Violent Crimes. New Mexico had 11,660 total violent crimes (which ranked 29th in the nation) and with a violent crime rate of 0.56% (which ranked it 5th among all the states including DC & PR). Of the total number of violent crimes, 116 were murders, 957 were forcible rapes, 1,847 were robberies, and 8,740 were aggravated assaults.
Property Crime. New Mexico had 75,094 total property crimes. Of the total number of property crimes, 21,384 were burglaries, 48,247 were larceny/thefts, and 5,463 were motor vehicle thefts.
Law Enforcement. New Mexico had the 29th most law enforcement employees per population. New Mexico ranked 27th in the nation for the most police officers per population.
