New York Population and Age Distribution. New York’s estimated population was 19.6 million. The median age was 38.1 years. 22% of the population was under the age of 18, and 14% was 65 years and over.
Median Household Income in New York State. The median income of households was $56,448. The total number of households was 7,238,922 with an average of 2.62 people.
New York Employment and Unemployment Rate. 57.5% of the New York population over the age of 15 were employed which ranks 31 st in the nation. The New York unemployment rate is 9.2% which was ranked 20th in the country.
Types of Employers. The types of employers in New York State were as follows: 546,048 (6%) were self-employed, 1,435,487 (15.8%) were employed by the federal, state, or local government and 7,106,578 (78.1%) were employed by the private sector.
Top Five New York Industries. The top five industries by percent in New York were: Educational Services and Health Care (27.3%), Retail (11.2%), Professional/Administrative/Scientific (11.2%), Accommodations/Food Service/Entertainment (9.4%), and Finance, Insurance Real Estate, Rental/Leasing (8%).
New York Occupations. Occupations for the population employed (over the age of 15) in New York’s private sector were: Business, Science, and Arts (38.5%), Sales and Office (24.2%), Service (20.3%), Production, Transportation, and Material Moving (9.7%), and Natural Resources, Construction, and Maintenance (7.3%).
New York Health Insurance Coverage. 89% of the civilian non-institutionalized population had health insurance coverage (11% had no coverage). Of those with coverage, 65% had private coverage and 35% had public coverage.
New York State Disability. 11% of the civilian non-institutionalized population of New York reported a disability. The New York disability claim rate was ranked 40th in the country.

Total Violent Crimes. New York had 79,610 total violent crimes (which ranked 4th in the nation) and with a violent crime rate of 0.41% (which ranked it 20th among all the states including DC & PR). Of the total number of violent crimes, 684 were murders, 2,848 were forcible rapes, 28,655 were robberies, and 47,423 were aggravated assaults.
Property Crime. New York had 376,140 total property crimes. Of the total number of property crimes, 64,553 were burglaries, 294,239 were larceny/thefts, and 17,348 were motor vehicle thefts.
Law Enforcement. New York had the 5th most law enforcement employees per population. New York ranked 5th in the nation for the most police officers per population.
