Median Household Income. The median income of households was $51,230. The total number of households was 4,958,249 with an average of 2.49 people.
Pennsylvania Employment and Unemployment Rate. 57.2% of the Pennsylvania population over the age of 15 were employed which ranks 33rd in the nation. The Pennsylvania unemployment rate is 8.9% which was ranked 22nd in the country.
Types of Pennsylvania Employers. The types of employers in Pennsylvania were as follows: 303,973 (5.1%) were self-employed, 657,264 (11.1%) were employed by the federal, state, or local government and 4,960,839 (83.6%) were employed by the private sector.
Top Five Pennsylvania Industries. The top five industries by percent in Pennsylvania were: Educational Services and Health Care (26.2%), Manufacturing (12.3%), Retail (11.8%), Professional/Administrative/Scientific (9.7%), and Accommodations/Food Service/Entertainment (8.3%).
Pennsylvania Occupations. Occupations for the population employed (over the age of 15) in Pennsylvania’s private sector were: Business, Science, and Arts (36.3%), Sales and Office (24.4%), Service (17.7%), Production, Transportation, and Material Moving (13.4%), and Natural Resources, Construction, and Maintenance (8.2%).
Pennsylvania Health Insurance Coverage. 90% of the civilian non-institutionalized population had health insurance coverage (10% had no coverage). Of those with coverage, 72% had private coverage and 32% had public coverage.
Disability. 13% of the civilian non-institutionalized population of Pennsylvania reported a disability. The Pennsylvania disability claim rate was ranked 16th in the country.

Total Violent Crimes. Pennsylvania had 44,503 total violent crimes (which ranked 7th in the nation) and with a violent crime rate of 0.35% (which ranked it 25th among all the states including DC & PR). Of the total number of violent crimes, 685 were murders, 3,327 were forcible rapes, 15,673 were robberies, and 24,818 were aggravated assaults.
Property Crime. Pennsylvania had 276,496 total property crimes. Of the total number of property crimes, 56,859 were burglaries, 204,609 were larceny/thefts, and 15,028 were motor vehicle thefts.
Law Enforcement. Pennsylvania had the 27th most law enforcement employees per population. Pennsylvania ranked 9th in the nation for the most police officers per population.
