Median Household Income. The median income of households was $54,554. The total number of households was 413,083 with an average of 2.44 people.
Rhode Island Employment and Unemployment Rate. 59.6% of the Rhode Island population over the age of 15 were employed which ranks 20th in the nation. The Rhode Island unemployment rate is 9.4% which was ranked 18th in the country.
Types of Rhode Island Employers. The types of employers in Rhode Island were as follows: 27,305 (5.3%) were self-employed, 67,463 (13.2%) were employed by the federal, state, or local government and 417,620 (81.4%) were employed by the private sector.
Top Five Rhode Island Industries. The top five industries by percent in Rhode Island were: Educational Services and Health Care (27%), Retail (11.9%), Manufacturing (11.4%), Accommodations/Food Service/Entertainment (10.6%), and Professional/Administrative/Scientific (9.6%).
Rhode Island Occupations. Occupations for the population employed (over the age of 15) in Rhode Island’s private sector were: Business, Science, and Arts (35.8%), Sales and Office (24.3%), Service (20.6%), Natural Resources, Production, Transportation, and Material Moving (11.5%), and Construction, and Maintenance (7.7%).
Rhode Island Health Insurance Coverage. 89% of the civilian non-institutionalized population had health insurance coverage (11% had no coverage). Of those with coverage, 70% had private coverage and 31% had public coverage.
Disability. 13% of the civilian non-institutionalized population of Rhode Island reported a disability. The Rhode Island disability claim rate was ranked 22nd in the country.

Total Violent Crimes. Rhode Island had 2,651 total violent crimes (which ranked 47th in the nation) and with a violent crime rate of 0.27% (which ranked it 35th among all the states including DC & PR). Of the total number of violent crimes, 34 were murders, 288 were forcible rapes, 713 were robberies, and 1,616 were aggravated assaults.
Property Crime. Rhode Island had 27,017 total property crimes. Of the total number of property crimes, 5,949 were burglaries, 18,440 were larceny/thefts, and 2,628 were motor vehicle thefts.
Law Enforcement. Rhode Island had the 31st most law enforcement employees per population. Rhode Island ranked 21st in the nation for the most police officers per population.
