Vermont Population and Age Distribution. Vermont’s estimated population was 0.6 million. The median age was 42.4 years. 20% of the population was under the age of 18, and 16% was 65 years and over.
Median Household Income. The median income of households was $52,977. The total number of households was 258,520 with an average of 2.32 people.
Vermont Employment and Unemployment Rate. 62.9% of the Vermont population over the age of 15 were employed which ranks 9th in the nation. The Vermont unemployment rate is 6.4% which was ranked 45th in the country.
Types of Vermont Employers. The types of employers in Vermont were as follows: 31,024 (9.5%) were self-employed, 45,645 (14%) were employed by the federal, state, or local government and 248,515 (76.2%) were employed by the private sector.
Top Five Vermont Industries. The top five industries by percent in Vermont were: Educational Services and Health Care (27.5%), Retail (11.8%), Manufacturing (10.9%), Accommodations/Food Service/Entertainment (9.2%), and Professional/Administrative/Scientific (9%).
Vermont Occupations. Occupations for the population employed (over the age of 15) in Vermont’s private sector were: Business, Science, and Arts (40.6%), Sales and Office (21.7%), Service (17.1%), Production, Transportation, and Material Moving (10.6%), and Natural Resources, Construction, and Maintenance (10%).
Vermont Health Insurance Coverage. 94% of the civilian non-institutionalized population had health insurance coverage (7% had no coverage). Of those with coverage, 69% had private coverage and 39% had public coverage.
Disability. 13% of the civilian non-institutionalized population of Vermont reported a disability. The Vermont disability claim rate was ranked 17th in the country.

Total Violent Crimes. Vermont had 893 total violent crimes (which ranked 52nd in the nation) and with a violent crime rate of 0.21% (which ranked it 47th among all the states including DC & PR). Of the total number of violent crimes, 8 were murders, 121 were forcible rapes, 112 were robberies, and 652 were aggravated assaults.
Property Crime. Vermont had 15,016 total property crimes. Of the total number of property crimes, 3,965 were burglaries, 10,616 were larceny/thefts, and 435 were motor vehicle thefts.
Law Enforcement. Vermont had the 4th most law enforcement employees per population. Vermont ranked 4th in the nation for the most police officers per population.
