Washington Population and Age Distribution. Washington’s estimated population was 6.9 million. The median age was 37.5 years. 23% of the population was under the age of 18, and 13% was 65 years and over.
Median Household Income. The median income of households was $57,573. The total number of households was 2,636,817 with an average of 2.56 people.
Washington Employment and Unemployment Rate. 58.4% of the Washington population over the age of 15 were employed which ranks 27th in the nation. The Washington unemployment rate is 8.7% which was ranked 26th in the country.
Types of Washington Employers. The types of employers in Washington were as follows: 201,619 (6.3%) were self-employed, 520,804 (16.3%) were employed by the federal, state, or local government and 2,477,275 (77.3%) were employed by the private sector.
Top Five Washington Industries. The top five industries by percent in Washington were: Educational Services and Health Care (21.3%), Professional/Administrative/Scientific (12.4%), Retail (11.5%), Manufacturing (10.8%), and Accommodations/Food Service/Entertainment (9.2%).
Washington Occupations. Occupations for the population employed (over the age of 15) in Washington’s private sector were: Business, Science, and Arts (38.1%), Sales and Office (22.8%), Service (18%), Production, Transportation, and Material Moving (11.4%), and Natural Resources, Construction, and Maintenance (9.7%).
Washington Health Insurance Coverage. 86% of the civilian non-institutionalized population had health insurance coverage (14% had no coverage). Of those with coverage, 69% had private coverage and 29% had public coverage.
Disability. 12% of the civilian non-institutionalized population of Washington reported a disability. The Washington disability claim rate was ranked 29th in the country.

Total Violent Crimes. Washington had 20,386 total violent crimes (which ranked 21st in the nation) and with a violent crime rate of 0.19% (which ranked it 49th among all the states including DC & PR). Of the total number of violent crimes, 206 were murders, 2,193 were forcible rapes, 5,745 were robberies, and 12,242 were aggravated assaults.
Property Crime. Washington had 252,333 total property crimes. Of the total number of property crimes, 60,725 were burglaries, 165,206 were larceny/thefts, and 26,402 were motor vehicle thefts.
Law Enforcement. Washington had the 51st most law enforcement employees per population. Washington ranked 51st in the nation for the most police officers per population.
